"... the high iron fence that surrounds the White House seemed increasingly to separate two different worlds. One view was hammered into the nation's living rooms every night in the network news. The other view was the one we lived with, struggling to make sense out of the kaleidoscope of impressions. We saw the actors in the drama not as cardboard caricatures but as flesh-and-blood people we knew and worked with, good people for the most part, reluctantly drawn into a web of intrigue spun by hands only partly seen."
