Die Gezeichneten (The Drawn / The Marked)
Berlin: Malik-Verlag, 1930. 1.-8. Thousand. Hardcover. Quarto. 126 [2]pp. Original black cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Two-color ribbon marker. Publisher's device on title page. The title for the collection of sixty drawings created within a span of fifteen years is representative for the artist's stance in view of the callous behavior of the German upper and middle class: "Die Gezeichneten" in German can simply refer to "those who were drawn" or it can refer to "those who are marked," which, considering the themes of the illustrations, is most likely intended by Grosz. The collection of drawings is representative for Grosz' satirical work before immigrating to the USA, capturing social decline and hypocrisy of the postwar Weimar Republic, corrupt politicians, callous upper middle class and marginalized people. Fifty-five of the sixty drawings are rendered lithographically, five in offset reproductions. Text in German. Minor wear along edges of binding. Circular 1/2" white paint splash at lower edge of front cover. Light starting at inside front cover. Half-title, title page and table of content with light blanket foxing, else mostly in margins with seven of the illustrations with light foxing in motifs. Good- to very good condition. Item #56100
