Fascinating work being a 1953 semi-autobiographical novel by James Baldwin. The novel examines the role of the Christian Church in the lives of African-Americans, both as a source of repression and moral hypocrisy and as source of inspiration and community. It also, more subtly, examines racism in the United States. The novel takes place during a 24-hour period with extended flashbacks of about seventy years. It was ranked 39th in the 1998 Modern Library list of the 100 best English language novels of the 20th Century and Time Magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels published between 1923 to 2005. Very light wear along edges of binding with spine lightly sunned and signs of a small sticker removed from tail of spine, but no library indicators in the book. Block just lightly age-toned.
