[8] 85 plates, 85 descriptive pages, [2]pp. Original three-quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt ruling on covers, gilt lettering and ruling on spine; raised bands. Gilt top edge. Marbled endpapers. Title page printed in red and black, with publisher's device. A pattern book of 85 plates with 1200 samples, mostly in color, with explanatory text by the German architect Heinrich Dolmetsch. Bound in the 1883 title page, as issued, announcing five less plates and 200 less illustrations, also with comments by H. Kolb.

This visual compendium of ornaments from various epochs and origins was compiled in view of the upswing of interest in applied arts relating to contemporary as well as historic designs. The patterns and designs presented in this book are rendered in chromolithography and representative for various cultures and time frames: Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Pompeian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Persian, Arabian, Turkish, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, extensive sections on the Italian, French and German Renaissance, and patterns of the 17th and 18th Century. Contains index at rear.

Text in German. Some wear along edges of binding, some very light staining and some scuffing with two inch closed tear at tail of leather spine, some scuffing of marbled boards. Some age-toning of text pages with water spot on page with foreword. One and a half by two inch chip on 1883 title page at foredge near bottom. Chromolithographs in excellent condition.
