The Art of Etching: A Handbook by Hermann Struck saw five steadily enlarged editions between 1908 to 1923, adding almost 100 pages between 1908 (238pp) by the time the fifth edition was printed in 1923 (331pp). The introduction offers the theoretical backdrop on the difference between painting and etching. The publication contains instructional texts covering the process of print making from the initial carving and acid treatment to the application of ink, the choice of paper and press, including guidance on artistic expression and graphic design.

The text and artwork are continuously expanded throughout the fives editions. The second, compared to the first edition, varies starting in the chapter headlined "Casual Remarks on the Images," with additional text on the artists Willi Geiger, Adolf Schinnerer, Carl Larsson, Lovis Corinth, Hans Meid, and Richard Winckel.
The third edition varies in the chapter "About Etching." On page 99 a short chapter on the process called "Cliche Verre" is added. Descriptive text is added for the artists Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Marcus Behmer, Heinrich Eickmann, August Gaul, Augustin Hirschvogel, Willi Jaeckel, Kokoschka, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Ludwih Meidner, Ernst Oppler, Max Pechstein, Emil Pottner, Hans Purrmann, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Robert F. The fourth edition varies compare to the third in that two artists are added, Joseph Budko and Paul Hermann.
