Frankfurt: Englert und Schlosser, 1926-1929. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. Original photo-illustrated white wraps with three-color lettering on covers. The magazine changed its subtitle to "International Monthly for Modern Design" and added Fritz Wichert as editor with the first issue of 1928. 1926-27: issues 1, 2, 5, 6, 7. 1928: issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7/8, 9, 10, 12. 1929: issue 9.
The magazine effectively expresses the German "Aufbruchstimmung (New Sense of Optimism)" after W.W.I. The design of all issues is typical for the modern style of the time as seen in Bauhaus and New Objectivity publications. All issues are illustrated with numerous b/w reproductions of photographs of modern architecture and documents, and contain several pages of advertisements. The monthly magazine introduces a variety of issues as expressions of culture, e.g. interior design, typefaces, car design, art, music, focusing on modern architecture and city planing.
Vol. 1, No. 1/26-27: with contributions on script, architecture and design as expression of culture, incl. various photographs of work by Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and others. No. 2/26-27: with contribution by Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and Jean Jeanneret, and others. No. 5/26-27: various illustrated contributions, incl. by E. May. No. 6/26-27: contribution include Martin Elsässer on the architectural design of the Fair "Music in the Life of the People" in Frankfurt 1927, and various contributions on contemporary music. Laid in a folded publisher's broadside on the "Furnished Small Apartment" No. 7/26-27: special issue on the "flat roof" with a contribution by Ernst May, Adolf Behne, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright (this with color illustrations), J. J. Oud, Josef Frank, and others.

No. 2/28: a photo-illustrated contribution by Oskar Schlemmer on "Piscator and the Modern Theater; Guido Bagier on "The Film in the Future;" Ernst Schoen on "Music and Radio;" and new designs in France and Switzerland; No. 3/28: Ernst Kállei on "Pictorial Photography" with photos by Moholy-Nagy, Otto Umbehr, Walter Peterhans, Ludwig Tihanyi, André Kertéz and Albert Renger-Patzsch; Ernst May on "The New Design" (One leaf of advertisement laid in) No. 4/28: Will Grohmann on "The Painter Oskar Schlemmer" with numerous reproductions of Schlemmer's work, Kai Konrad Düffel on Willi Baumeister, and a illustrated contribution by Richard J. Vol. 3, No. 9: Memorial issue to commemorate the death of the German architect Adolf Meyer, a student of Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens and around 1915 the office manager and later partner in the architectural firm of Walter Gropius. In 1919 Gropius appointed Meyer as a master at the Bauhaus. Mayer also was credited as a co-designer for the Gropius entry of the 1922 Chicago Tribune Tower competition. The issue contains various of Meyer's own projects, illustrated with b/w photographs, architectural models, drawings and plans and pays tribute to Meyer as a teacher. Contains the obituaries of Peter Behrens and Walter Gropius. Text in German. Very light wear and occasional very light damage due to water exposure. Very good condition. Item #55921
