Illustrated paper boards exactly matching the design of the dust jacket. One of 1500 copies of this limited first edition, as stated on the colophon at rear. Cover and jacket design by American avant-garde visual artist and filmmaker Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). Includes some pages throughout printed on green, yellow and pink paper.

An early English-language monograph on Surrealism, in all types of media and contexts. Includes quotes, texts and short essays from various noted Surrealist figures, as well as discussions of the moment as it relates to the fine arts, photography, film, poetry, literature, psychology, terminology and the human experience. Includes b/w photographic reproductions of artwork throughout. Also notable is the inclusion of English translations of the scenarios for the seminal Surrealist films Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog, 1929) and L'Age d'Or (The Golden Age, 1930), by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali.

Scarce dust jacket with spine missing. Additional light stains, as well as chipping and tears to the covers of the jacket, with minimal loss of image. Small piece of masking tape stuck to the back cover of the jacket. Binding with sunning to the spine as well, as the covers, with additional light smudges and stains. Book block tight. Interior quite clean, save for some light stains to the first few pages, and at the very edges of the pages in the last sections. Jacket in poor, binding in very good-, interior in very good condition overall. Protected in modern mylar. poor to vg. Item #55919

Julian Levy (1906–1981) was an American art dealer and writer, who was a prominent champion of the Surrealist art movement. His gallery in New York City, served as an important location to showcase surrealist art, avant-garde artists, and American photographers in the 1930s and 1940s.
