Ostwald's theory of color provides a scientifically based arrangements of colors, according to their content of white, black and saturated colors, and thus the measurably and valid norm. It provides the basic rules of color harmony and designates homogeneous colors in their harmonic value. The reduced uniform color tone triangle consists of eight shades of gray marked aa-pp, abbreviated as ap, expressing the content of white in a 100-part mixture with the content of black added as a supplement to 100, and referred to as the non-variegated colors (white + black). Description and examples for the application follow.

Additionally, six 24-part color wheels of variegated colors, marked with two letters, are divided into three categories: na clearly clear, ea light clean ne, ni dark clean te cal.

The color wheels consist of three color tones each: yellow 1-3, orange 4-6, red 7-9, violet 10-12, ultramarine, 13-15, ice blue 16-18, sea green 19-21, and leaf green 22-24, of which the colors 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20 and 23 are the main colors. The primary colors are: yellow 2, red 9, ultramarine 14 and sear green 20. The warm colors are 23-9, cool colors 11-21, and in between those that are colors neither warm nor cool 9-11 and 21-23. The chart contains detailed instructions, an example and suggestions to obtain the desired color shade.

The instructions for the usage of the six color wheels in this chart are designed for schools, the arts, industry, the trade and crafts according to the Ostwald-Illgner system, and compiled and published by Josef Horácek.
