Original gilt stamped olive cloth, with gilt lettering to spines. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispieces in both volumes, including a tissue-guarded, printed color frontispiece in Vol. 2. Title pages in red and black lettering.

First edition of Arthur T. Bolton's monumental monograph on the architecture of Robert (1728-1792) and James Adam (1732-1794), two Scottish brothers who were renowned neoclassical architects, interior and furniture designers. Contains extensive topographical index to the collection of Adam drawings in volume two.

This two-volume set is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w illustrations of floor plans, architectural drawings, as well as photographic reproductions showing outside and inside views of some of the most famous buildings the two brothers built, including the seat of the Duke of Northumberland at Sion; the villa of the Earl of Mansfield at Kenwood; the seat of the Earl of Bute at Luton Park; the house of the Earl of Derby in Grosvenor-Square, of Sir W.W. Winn in St. James-Square, of the Earl of Shelburne in Berkeley-Square; various designs of public and private buildings, etc.

Light wear along edges of binding, more pronounced at head and tail of spines, and lightly rubbed. Inked library number on inside front covers, inked name of previous owner on marbled endpapers, also with library warning labels pasted to marbled front endpapers. Very good condition. Item #55453
