Li Giardini di Roma... Nuovamente dati alle stampe con direttione di Giov. de Sandrart in Norimberga (The Gardens of Rome... Newly Printed under the Direction of Johann Sandrart in Nuremberg)
[Nuremberg]: G. G. de Sandrart, [ca. 1695]. Modern morocco. Folio (34.7 by 24 cm). [2, engraved title], 18 numbered double-suite folding engraved plates bound-in along the center line. Recent full cordovan red morocco, panelled and lettered in gilt. Title lightly soiled; occasional smudges (mostly marginal), else about fine, in a beautiful period-style binding by Philip Dusel.
An uncommon edition of this well-known work. Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678) was an engraver known for his "impeccable perspective construction and brilliant chiaroscuro contrasts" (Trecanni) in his depictions of churches, palaces, public and religious ceremonies. The present work on the gardens of Rome comprises alternating plans and bird-eye view perspectives of the Belvedere gardens of the Vatican, the gardens of the Quirinale, the Palatino, and the Villa Borghese, among others. Nearly Fine. Item #55416
