First three volumes of the set from the collection of the archaeologist and anthropologist Hasso von Winning, a widely published scholar of Pre-Columbian and West Mexican culture.

"Little did I know, in 1964, when I first worked at Palenque with Tobert Rands, that I was to be drawn back again and again to this site, to learn, to know, to love and appreciate, and to make a record of its works of art. The present series of volumes are the product of the years of study, of photographing and drawing the art of Palenque that resulted." (Preface by Robertson).

Beautifully illustrated with color and b/w photographs and drawings of Palenque, its architecture and artwork throughout. Includes drawings of the East Tablet of the Temple of the Inscriptions by Linda Schele, printed to folding plates, with Munsell color notation for the Temple of the Inscriptions on facing page. Many of the artifacts contain drawings of the objects photographed next to or on facing pages. Volume one contains 344, volume two 296, volume three 435, and volume 286 photographs and drawings, a number of the latter on folding plates.

All volumes with list of illustrations at front. Vol. 1 with appendices. I Color Notations According to the Munsell Book of Color, II Corrections to the Maudslay Drawing, III Data Concerning Piers, bibliography and index. Vol. 2 with appendices. I, Color Notation according to the Munsell Book of Color. Appendix II with corrections to the Maudslay Drawings, III Data Concerning Piers, bibliography and index. Vol. 3 with table IV Chronology of buildings, and table V the Dimensional Comparisons–Houses A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H, bibliography and index. Vol. 4 with appendices of Color Notations according to the Munsell Book of Color, architectural data, genealogies of the gods and rulers at Palenque, a bibliography, and index, all at end of text pages.

Laid in a 1987 fourteen page write-up of Bertold Riese at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities on the publication of the first three volumes of this four volume set. Pasted in to inside front cover of vol. 1 a page from "The Masterkey 42:2, 1967" announcing Dr. Robert F. Heizer being appointed as an advisor of the Southwest Museum. All volumes with two inked names of previous owners, Cliff Niederer and Hasso von Winning. Very light wear and sunning of dustjackets. Presumably collection ID numbers inked to endpapers and title pages, except for volume four. Near fine condition. Item #55330
