Octavo. viii, [4], 310pp. Contemporary brown leather with gilt ruling, rebacked on a modern brown leather spine, with gilt tooling, raised bands, and original red leather label with gilt lettering. First volume only (parts 1&2). This is a copy of the first edition, with the second state frontispiece (Teernik 290, AA) issued circa November 1726. Includes two engraved maps (for part 1 and part 2).

A nice copy of this seminal and hugely influential work of literary satire, and classic of English literature.

Binding with minor rubbing and scratches to cover. Light damage to original red leather label. Interior with starting at the interior front cover, but book block is quite tight overall. Light damp staining to interior covers and endpapers. Sporadic minor instances of foxing throughout, but mostly quite clean throughout. Period inscriptions from previous owners at the top of the front endpapers, and verso of the frontispiece. The initial pagination and very last pages with some light worming, to the bottom margin and right margin respectively, but no text or image is affected. Binding in very good, inteiror very good- condition overall. vg- to vg. Item #55037

Provenance: This copy previously owned by John Spier, Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford. Also the rector of the church of Barson (Barfrestone), Kent from 1752-1758.
