Duodecimo. vi, 382 [1]pp. Original bright red cloth with black lettering and frame on cover, black lettering and decorative framing on spine; in original color-illustrated dustjacket with red and blue lettering on spine. Edinburgh city seal on title page. Inscribed "Compliments by Mrs. Zane Grey", by the author's wife Lina, on front free endpaper. No date printed, however the publisher lists forthcoming titles to be issued, starting in early 1927, on the interior flap of the jacket. Scarce in jacket.
Told by an omniscient narrator Grey's novel has been called "the most popular western novel of all time (Fred Stenson)." The novel tells the story Bern Venters, Jane Withersteen, and Jim Lassiter, struggling with persecution from the Mormon community of Cottonwood, Utah. in the late 19th century. It is said to have shaped the formula of the popular Western genre. Dustjacket with some wear along edges, small chips and light creasing along top edge, and some medium chips along bottom edge of dustjacket. Light silverfish traces on front cover. Light damp-staining on inside covers, light offsetting from dustjacket flaps to endpapers. Good- to very good condition. Item #54902
