"It was in the 12th century, in Koniah, that the ceramists of the Seljuk sultans began to execute the coatings of which such superb vestiges still remain, and at no other time has the ceramics of the Orient been more brilliant. Although orthodox Muslims, the Seljuk did not completely reject the representations of men and animals. For their manufacture, they used four colors: light blue and dark blue (turquoise and cobalt), manganese violet and white, color which have only gained by the patina of time. The most beautiful models of this period are in Syrtehali Medressé (1242) and Karatai (1251)." (Introduction). Contains listings of publisher's titles pasted to inside front and back cover. Text in French. Very light wear along portfolio edges. Light age-toning of pages, not affecting lithographs. Protected in modern mylar. Very good to fine condition. Item #54747
