Cologne: Galerie Rudolf Kicken & R. K. Books, 1980. First edition, limited. Hardcover. EA iv/v. Artist Copy. Elephant Folio (21 x 16 1/8"). Original gray cloth portfolio box with black lettering on cover and spine. Contains brief biographical data in German and English. All Silver Gelatin prints are matted, signed in plate, stamped and hand-numbered on versos, five of them signed by Phyllis Umbehr on verso. Biographical data on inside cover of introductory signature.

Portfolio 3: The portfolio contains ten autographed original photographs and will appear in a first and final edition of fifty copies and a further five for the artist (I to V). Of the fifty, twenty-five will be published in the USA. The photographs were printed on Kodak paper Ektalure G by Christine Sander under the supervision of UMBO... Due to the sudden death of UMBO some photographs in a few portfolios could not be signed. They are authorized on the verso by means of an estate stamp and the signature of his daughter, Phyllis Umbehr.

The photographs: 1. Selbst (ca. 1930). 2. Rut Maske (1927). 3. Portrait W. B. (1928, not signed on verso). 4. Kolja Wassilieff Malt Valeska Gert (1928). 5. Träumende (1982/29, not signed on verso). 6. Pantoffeln (1928/29). 7. Berliner Artistenschule (1930). 8. Unheimliche Strasse (1928, not signed on verso). 9. Am Strand (Strandleben), (1928, not signed on verso). 10. Clown Grock (1928/29, not signed on verso).

Light wear along edges of box and light water exposure to top and bottom margins of several prints, not affecting images. Small faint circular, one inch diameter, stain on front cover. Some pencil descriptors on inside signatures. Very good to fine condition. Item #54724

Otto Umbehr (1902-1980) was a German photo journalist. He had studied at the Bauhaus and worked as a photojournalist for the Wehrmacht during W.W.II. Umbehr was one of the founding members of Dephot (German Photo Service GmbH) and was friends with Robert Capa. The agency was closed by the Nazis and his archive was destroyed during an air raid on Berlin.
