Album of Photochromes of American Indians [20 PRINTS]
Detroit: Detroit Photographic Company (Detroit Publishing Company), 1899-1904. Hardcover. Oblong octavo. 8 1/4 x 11". 16 un-numbered leaves. Dark brown leather over brown cloth boards, with gilt lettering on the front cover. Marbled endpapers.
An album containing 16 original vibrant photochrome prints featuring Native Americans, including notable figures from the period. Each print measures 9 x 7" and is mounted on a single-sided heavy stock paper leaf. Each image is captioned near the bottom, stating its catalog number, name of the subject, and the publishers dated copyright information. Although here uncredited many of these images can be attributed to the company's most famous and prominent photographer William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), best known for his images of the American West. At least one of the images (perhaps multiple) were taken for the company by Henry G. Peabody (1855-1951).

Peabody) - "Hiawatha's Arrival" (staged scene, unknown man in a canoe)* - "The Return (staged scene, three men in a canoe, with family on the shore)*.
Binding with some rubbing to extremities. Book block starting at a few place, but holding. Some images with some light rubbing close to edges, but still vibrant and in very good condition. The final four images are loose, and have been laid in on the last leaf. Binding in good+, images in very good condition overall. g+ to vg. Item #54571
*Three images in the collection are part of a series of "staged scenes" produced by the company meant to correspond to the plot of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famed epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855).
