Original parchment portfolio with black lettering on cover. The double plate at front contains the title page in orange, a woodcut after Hans Thaddäus Hoyer, an introduction by Hans W. Fischer on verso, with decorative initial, the table of content on facing page, and colophon on verso, all lithographed by Hertwig. The colophon includes names of printers involved in this endeavor. The binding was facilitated by Carl Scheer, Berlin.

This Artist Edition printed with table of contents for 27 prints, additional three prints layed in, two two of them signed by the artists, the third an unsigned Pechstein woodcut. This portfolio without artist name after "Künstler=Exemplare für (Artist copy for)" on colophon. An additional edition of 100 numbered copies was issued for the trade, published in 1923.

The alphabetical printed table of contents of this portfolio names 27 artists, see table below. Three additional works by Max Pechstein, Emil Stumpp, and one unidentified work are laid in. The original artist edition was conceived with 27 participating artists. The additional three prints were added. Pechstein's print in our collection with a circular punch hole (1/4" diameter) in black area of framing on the right.

The prints for this edition were contributed by an array of German artists, "Stiftung deutscher Künstler," to honor Arno Holz on the occasion of his 60th birthday (Söhn HDO 310,1-30/29 u. 30 ohne Abbildung). Arno Holz (1863-1929) was a German naturalist poet and dramatist, best known for "Phantasus," a collection of poetry. He was awarded the Schiller Prize in 1885 and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature nine times starting in 1919.
