Extraordinary publication on Louis Lortet's travels in Phoenicia, Lebanon and Judea (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine). Lortet was traveling on behalf of the Natural History Museum of Lyon to collect botanical and zoological specimen. Contains 364 spectacular b/w gravures depicting architecture, the environment, the people, tools, pottery, etc. from drawings and photographs, and several maps. Many of the illustrations are rendered full page. Some of the gravures were taken from photographs by the firm Maison Bonfils in Beirut.
Light wear along edges of binding with some light scuffing on covers. Some sporadic damp-staining, generally not affecting imagery, except lightly on pages 369-383. Very good condition. Item #54428
