Five Anti-Semitic Pencil Caricatures by Unidentified Illustrators [TWO ILLUSTRATORS]
NP: NP, [1944]. Original artwork. Loose leaf. Octavo (8 1/8 x 6 1/8"). Five sheets with elaborate satirical drawings on French politics and the Spanish Civil War, with captions and newspaper clippings pasted down as artistic elements, reminiscent of the style of George Grosz. Two of the drawings are initialed W. R.
1. Frankreich geht zur Wahl. (France Votes). Possibly 1936, also caricature 2, when the Communists registered a landslide victory in the national elections. The sheet contains three separate scenes depicting the contrasts between regular folks and upper class in three scenes. The newspaper clipping "Frankreich geht zur Wahl: placed diagonally into the center.
2. Kommunistischer Wahlsieg in Frankreich. (Communist Election Victory in France). Depicting a warrior with Laurel gracing his bald head with snakes curling around his neck ans shoulders. The bottom right shows a depiction of the Eifel Tower with the Communist Russian symbol 'hammer and sichel' at the bottom. The newspaper cutout with title and subtitle pasted diagonally across the bottom half of the drawing.
3. Schändung eines französischen Ehrenmals. (Desecration of a French Memorial). Caricature memorial for the fallen soldiers, man with hat holding sword broken blade while a worker with half of the blade and paint pot rushing off. A newspaper clipping with title as above reports of the fuss in the Palace of Justice, complaining about the memorial depicting a a lawyer holding a sword with broken blade and the charcoal description on the pedestal: "Down with France." Besides that the pedestal was smeared with paint. The assumption was that a Communist lawyer must have been the perpetrator.

4. "Heeresbericht. An der Madrid Front kam es zu stürmischen Angriffen der Roten." (Official Army Communiqué. At the Madrid front we saw tumultuous attacks of the Reds). This cartoon depicts a Semitic bull rider with lance and shield, the latter with the communist "hammer and sickle" on front. Initialed W. R.
5. Spiel mit dem Feuer. Die Lunte brennt, Genossin. Jetzt nur hübsch achtgeben, dass niemand uns den Brand zertritt! Weltrevolution Moskau (Play with Fire. The fuse burns, comrade. Now we have to be careful that nobody extinguishes the fire! World Revolution Moscow). This cartoon depicts a couple, the man in prison garb holding a matchbook after lighting the fuse to a bomb. Both, man and woman, with extreme nasal features. Initialed WR. Very good condition. Item #54280
