First printing of Louis Icart's engravings, in black with rubricated initials, full page with pagination in red and superimposed, calligraphed text. Text in French. Vellum cover rubbed. Portfolio flaps with some chipping and tears along edges but intact, age-toned. Cover of portfolio with some smudging, little more pronounced on front. Louis Justin Laurent Icart (1888-1950) was a French painter, graphic artist and illustrator. His work was influenced by the French masters of the 18th Century, Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, and Degas, Monet and Redon. Icart produced more than five hundred engravings and illustrated some thirty books. In this work Icart moved away from his usual style depicting sensual women to tackle a darker, expressionistic subject.
