Original grass green cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Color frontispiece with tissue guard. Decorative initial. The colored frontispiece and collotype illustrations are by Emery Walker, Limited, London. Contains list of contributors and plates at front.
Beautifully illustrated with thirty-nine collotype plates and one color frontispiece, each plate depicting numerous objects, including brooches, chains, sword heads, plaques, buckles, swords, ivory diptychs, ornaments, patenas, rings, bracelets, clasps, ankle lace, belt mounts, a helmet, a gravestone, among others.
"The definition of the scope of this year's Exhibition as the Art of the Dark Ages in Europe c. 400 to 1000 A.D.' inferentially excludes Byzantine art." (Preface). The art exhibited was on loan by a few private collectors, e.g. Messrs. Durlacher Brothers, Madame la Comtesse de Béhagute and Monsieur Adolphe Stoclet. The institutions contributing to the exhibitions are the Royal Irish Academy, the Völkerkunde Museum Berlin, and Hungarian museums.
"An Oxford historian has dated the Dark Ages 476-918, a period which includes the Migration and Viking periods of northern Europe, and the Merovingian and Carlovingian periods of France. In England the term includes the pagan and Christian periods of the Anglo-Saxons and the early years of the Danish or Viking period; in Ireland the Celtic period continued, and all these are particularly well represented in the Exhibition..." (Introduction).
Binding with some wear along edges, light at corners with some scuffing at top foredge of front and back cover. Spine sunned. Lightly starting at along top of frontispiece. Interior and plates in fine condition. Good to fine condition. Item #54052
