Den Buchschmuck für dieses Exemplar schuf Herr Herbert Arnold, Berlin." (This book was written by Charlotte Wellnitz, Frankfurt, in the year 1926. It is numbered 1 in the series of Handwritten Copies. The illustrations for this copy are by Herbert Arnold, Berlin.) Contains seven watercolors in variant sizes (4 1/2 x 2 1/2" (2) - 3 5/8 x 3 1/4" - 2 3/4 x 4 3/4" - 4 1/2 x 2 1/2" (2) - 6 34 x 3 1/8), with tissue guard.

The poems present visions on life and death, family, nature, etc. The collection of poems also includes titles like "Inflation," "Revolution," and "Wahlcampagne" which, though composed in traditional form, vehemently criticize the makeup of society, expressing disdain towards the voracious actions of the upper class.

Poems included: Die Urne, Die Seele über dem Alltag, Waldlied (with watercolor), Buchen von Banz, Zaunkönige, Frühling (with watercolor), Der Jüngling, Abschied (with watercolor), Trutz Wandern (with watercolor), Das Kinderlied, Nachtmarsch, Zwei Fronten (with watercolor), Todtensonntag, Ballade vom Lerchenlied, Ballade der Mutter, Ballade vom Vater, Ballade vom Glück, Inflation, Revolution, Wahlcampagne (with watercolor), Das Gerücht (with watercolor). Text in German. Covers slightly bent. Inside covers and free endpapers with very light foxing. Interior in fine condition.

Laid in a manuscript letter, dated August 19, 1926, to unnamed Dr., presumably T. Pütter, from Herbert Arnold, announcing shipment of illustrations, elaborating on details regarding the illustrations for the book, including prices for the illustrations delivered.

Handschriftliches Exemplar No. 2, 1927: Elephant Folio. 38 [4]pp. Original textured stiff dark gray, string-bound wraps. Illustrated title page. Unique manuscript. This copy includes all poems of the illustrated copy No. 1 in calligraphy but without original art. Wraps with very light wear along edges. Interior in fine condition.

One finished watercolor (7 3/8 x 10") with plain cover sheet in the style of Herbert Arnold, unsigned, three letters, and one original photograph of a painting by Herbert Arnold. The watercolor depicts a knight in armor with lance, chasing death in a rural setting.

Two letters addressed to Nantus laid in. One three page letter, signed Gisela, dated Heidelberg January 1, 1928, expressing thanks for the copy of above title and joy regarding an announced visit. The second signed Augus, written on unused fourth page of first letter, undated, also expresses thanks for receipt of the book. Both in a postmarked envelope address to the lawyer Dr. T. Pütter.

The photograph (7 x 5") of a painting by Herbert Arnold, as noted in pencil on verso, depicts Mother Mary holding her child, with Joseph resting nearby and a rejoicing cherub. Stamped August Scherl, Photographisches Atelier, on verso.

Laid in a b/w magazine clipping of Arnold/s painting "Ruhe auf der Flucht," not in this collection.

Herbert Arnold (1877-1941) was a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Arnold resisted the drastic changes and currents of modern art. He was supported by Otto Roloff who exhibited Arnold's works in the Graphische Kabinett at the Verein Berliner Künstler (Association of Berlin Artists) posthumously in 1941. Otto Roloff was a painter and graphic artist and since 1935 a member of the Reichskammer für bildende Künste.
