Third edition of this detailed treatise on the tobacco-smoke enema, first published in 1757. "It was the author's intention to popularize the use of tobacco-smoke clysters in the treatment of various diseases... In 1752 he completed a machine which met his requirement,s and he has used it successfully since then" (Arents). Despite the dangerous character of the tobacco-smoke therapy, its use increased in the XVIIIth century, largely through the influence of English and German physicians. Schaeffers work became a textbook on the subject and passed through several editions. At the verso of the title-page appears a quote attributed to the physician Giorgio Baglivi (1668-1707): Necessitas medicinam invenit, experientia perfecit (Medicines are produced out of necessity, but perfected by experience.) Second plate signed J.N. Maag of Ratisbon (draughtsman and engraver). Item #53601
