André-Jean Festugière (1898-1982) was a French philosopher and Dominican, and a philologist specializing in Neoplatonism. Educated at Collège Stanislas, the Lycée Condorect and Louis-le-Grand, and the École Normale Supérieure (1918), the École Francaise de Rome (1920-1921) and the French School of Athens. (1921-1922) He entered the Dominican Order Dominicainsin in 1923 and was ordained as a priest in 1930. Festugière was credited with the translation and editing of the writings attributed to Hermes Trismégiste, among others.

Hermes Trismegistus (Hermes the Trice-Greatest) is the purported author of the Hermetica, a series of writings combining the knowledge of the material and spiritual world known as Hermeticism. He is considered to be a legendary Hellenistic period figure that originated as the syncretic combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. In the Muslim and Bahá'i traditions Hermes Trismegistus has been associated with the prophet Idris. Popular among alchemists and astrologers Isaac Casaubon shattered the Renaissance belief that Hermes Trismegistus was a wise Egyptian priest in 1614, demonstrating that the Hermetic writings clearly postdate the advent of Christianity.
