The Hebrew Benevolent Society was founded in 1822. Differences between Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews delayed the creation of an orphanage until 1858. During the tumultuous fundraiser for the orphanage $10,000 were raised and the orphanage opened in a rented building in Chelsea in 1860, moved to a purpose-built home in 1863 and to a newly erected building on Amsterdam Avenue in 1884. The Asylum closed in 1941.
