Detailed account of his experiences in the South Pacific in the early 19th century by English Missionary John Williams (1796-1839). With extensive remarks on the natural history of the islands, origin, languages, traditions, and usage of the inhabitants. Illustrated with twenty-seven wood- engravings by G. Baxter, six of them full page plates, including color frontispiece. The engraving on page 535, "A cap from Aituaki...," is not listed in the list of plates. Includes a folding map of Polynesia at front. Some of the in-text engravings are full page.

Minor wear to binding. Stamp of date on inside front cover. Library stamp on title page and in margin of first page of dedication. Blind-stamped by library on page 101.
