München: Albert Langen Verlag, 1925. Second revised 4-6th Thousand. Hardcover. Quarto. 111pp. Original yellow cloth with red modern typography and design by Moholy-Nagy on covers, protected by modern mylar. Black endpapers. First title of the iconic series of fourteen separate books published between 1925 and 1931. The publication was originally planned to be published in 1924. Gropius and Moholy-Nagy had envisioned a comprehensive series of no less than 50 titles, covering all aspects of intellectual life but due to the depression only fourteen titles were published.

In his foreword to the second edition Gropius states that modern architecture has followed the suggestions laid out in the first edition at a surprisingly fast pace. What then was more of a guess has become a clear-cut reality today and has manifested itself in modern architecture in Germanic, Slavic and Latin countries. Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance were important only in European countries, the new spirit of architecture of the technical age has started to conquer the whole civilized world. The growing interest in the development of the new architecture clearly shows the meaning of the new architecture: the design of living processes. The second edition was complemented with a few new images, partly replacing the earlier ones.

The book is illustrated with full page b/w photographs of modern architecture, architectural drawings and models throughout, including projects of Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Hans Poelzig, Hannes Meyer, K. S. Mielnikow, Mart Stam, Perret Frères, Bruno Taut, Mies van der Rohe, Max Taut, Richard Neutra, Erich Mendelsohn, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, G. Rietveld, J. J. P. Oud and others, all with captions. Contains descriptive lists of images and Bauhaus Books at rear. Text in German. Binding somewhat rubbed with spine mostly missing. Stamp "Printed in Germany" on half-title and lightly starting at title page. Good- to very good condition. Item #51734
