The preface outlines the national socialist view of art being entrenched with the people, highlights the moral decay of society after W.W.I. and subsequently art drifting to become intellectualized and a distortion of the people's view of art. The protagonist of this development of art as a form of expression of a new humanity are the Jewish-Bolshevic writers. It was therefore of utmost importance to foster the true creative skill instead of suffocating it. The Führer is hailed as the source of the attempt to reverse this direction, emphasizing the timeless value of art.
Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of artwork, juxtaposing 'questionable distortions' in modern art with realistic renditions, e.g. Otto Dix' "War Cripple (Kriegskrüppel)" Elk Ebers "The last Hand-grenade (Die letzte Handgranate)," Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's "Man Effigy (Männerbildnis)" with Paul Roloff's painting of "P. Defreger," or Paul Klee's "Bäume (Trees)" with Heinrich von Richthofen's "Evening Landscape," to name a few.
