Mark Tobey. Painter of To-Day

Paris-London-New York: Tudor Publishing Company, 1961. First edition. Hardcover. Folio. 6 leaves text, 12 plates. Original stiff paper portfolio in heavy paper dust jacket with two color lettering on cover, in light gray cloth chemise with orange lettering on black handle bar, housed in gray cloth slipcase with gray and orange lettering on cover.

Impressive portfolio on this American painter, known for his densely structured compositions. Often associated with expressionism, Tobey’s work, as Choay writes, “…his work presents none of the characteristics of American painting. It is based neither on violence (of gesture or color), nor on expressionism; it does not involve speed of execution, nor does it raise sloppiness to the level of a method. On the contrary…” The twelve high-quality offset reproductions in color featured in this portfolio, was prepared by Clichés Union and printed by Imprimerie Lecot, the text by Darantiere, the ski-case by F.I.A.P. from designs by Marcel Jack.

Slipcase and chemise with light wear but staining from water exposure near spine, not affecting paper portfolio. Slipcase and chemise in good-, portfolio with exception of a small yellow stain at top left corner of front cover in fine condition. Good- to fine condition. Item #51155
