Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1917-1924. Second printing. Hardcover. Octavo. 10 volumes. Each volume with its own index. Uniformly bound in original green cloth with gilt lettered spines and a gilt floral device on front covers. Top edges gilt. Each volume illustrated with a photographic frontispiece with a printed tissue guard. A few volumes have very minor spotting to covers and a hint of rubbing at extremities of spines and tips, but overall a bright, collectible set in very good + or better condition.

John Muir (1838-1914) also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks", was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States of America. A friend and confidante of President Theodore Roosevelt, Muir is credited with the creation of the National Park System and was the founder of the Sierra Club.

The slightly earlier, limited, "Manuscript Edition" was published in 1916.
