This work is assembled in two parts. The first part, "Ensembles," with Boltanski's self portrait on the front cover, is a reorganization by Jacques Roubaud of 3 of Boltanski's "books of lists" into 99 new lists. The second part, "Multiplications," with Roubaud's portrait on the back cover, consists of 35 Boltanski portraits that have each been die cut into three horizontal strips so that (with the spiral binding) they can now be reassembled into 353 new permutations.
