The confrontation triggered general strife worldwide and tension particularly in cities like San Francisco with sizable Chinatowns, which had to be guarded and patrolled night and day by Federal troops. Manson projects the lives lost in race riots, lawlessness and internal outbreaks accompanying strikes were almost double the losses in naval and military conflicts. An armistice was negotiated and the subsequent peace treaty prompted the withdrawal of the blockading Asiatic fleet. "Our own people were simply dumb with humiliation." Manson closed with the chapter: "The War's Lesson." Wraps with light wear along edges, small chips and closed tears. Preface with one inch closed tear at bottom edge.
