Original marbled sheep with red calf spine label. illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece and 48 woodcut plates (most with multiple images). Frontispiece and title page foxed, and occasional foxing of some of the plates and their facing text leafs. Hinges rubbed, but sound. 1" portion of head of spine rubbed. The main focus of the plates and text is on European geological features like volcanoes and their attendant disasters to mankind, but the plates, for example, also show the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem, the Grotto at Nazareth, India's Mausoleum of Hyder Ali, the Great Wall of China and the old Eddystone Lighthouse. In addition, the author's esoteric tastes run from white termites to "modern" inventions like the hot air balloon. Contemporary ownership signature on front free endpaper. Very good. Item #49553
