Collections of poetic compositions by two Belgian Jesuits: Bernard Bauhuis (van Bauhuysen; 1574-1619) was born in Antwerp and taught as a professor of the humanities; born in Ypres, the long-lived Baudewijn Cabilliau (1568-1652) began his career as a professor of literature, and later engaged in missionary work for 45 years, after which he served as rector at Cassel. Bauhuis' Epigrammatum is the third edition, revised by the author, first published at Cologne by Bernard Gaulther in 1615 (not noted by Sommervogel) and re-issued by Balthasar Moretus in 1616. “Censura” dated 25 August 1615. “De Cometâ Anni M.DC.XIIX”, a notable epigram in this first part, reflects the influence of the latest discoveries of Galileo, which were defended by the Jesuit Orazio Grassi, teacher of Mathematics at the Collegio Romano, in his discourse called “Disputatio astronomica de tribus cometis anni MDCXVIII”. Pages 54-55 advertise two upcoming works: Divae, optimae, maximaeq. Matri-Virgini Marae, admirabilem hunc, unius libri versum, unius versus librum, Christianum proteum; Deo optimo miaximo aeterni Dei Filio Christo Iesu mundi servatori proteus. Cabilliau's Epigrammata Selecta is the first edition. Both works are uncommon works, rarely located outside of European libraries.

Provenance: Contemporary manuscript ex-libris on title of first work “Coll. Soc. Iesu Mech[lienesis] ex Bib. Maj.”. Very good. Item #49245
