Woodcut lettrines and ornamentation. Contemporary Dutch vellum with central vignettes stamped in blind, spine with raised bands. Occasional light foxing (a few leaves more heavily) or mild damstaining; worm trace at fore-margin first several leaves of first volume, else a very good set.
Third edition of these "dissertations on important scriptural subjects" which, in the opinion of William Orme "are treated very judiciously" by the Dutch theologian Herman Witsius (1638-1708). Topics include the prophets and prophecy; the mysteries of the Levitical tabernacle; a comparison of the priesthood of Aaron and Christ; Daniel's four beasts; the worship of Moloch; the present and future age; the apocalyptic epistles. The fine plates drawn and engraved by J. van den Avele depict Hebrew antiquarian subjects, including the construction of the wildnerness tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, the priestly vestments, and the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem. Notably, one folding plate has a tipped-in section depicting the curtain before the sanctum sanctorum which can be raised to show the Ark of the Covenant! With Johannes à Marck's oratio funebris for Witsius.
