Protected in a modern mylar jacket with handwritten lettering in gold on the spine. This multi-lingual work is comprised of countless clandestine photographs taken in the Lodz Ghetto during the Holocaust by Polish-Jewish photographer and journalist Henryk Ross (1910-1991). Originally Ross was tasked by the Department of Statistics for the Jewish Council of the ghetto to taken identity and statistical photographs of the residents and was given only enough film to fulfill his official duties. The resourceful Ross was able to include many individuals per photograph, which gave him extra fill, which he used to take unauthorized photographs in the streets of the ghetto and in turn capture images of Nazi atrocities and oppression.
The images here provide invaluable and powerful photo-documentation of the daily life residents and their struggles to survive the harsh conditions of the ghetto. Photographic reproductions in b/w throughout, including instances of photo-collage and photomontage, as well as images of original documents, money, broadsides, signs and posters from the ghetto. All images captioned in English, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, French and Polish. Page 8 contains a map of the ghetto in black.
