Publisher's device in black on the back cover. Pages uncut. Signed and inscribed by the author in ink (Isaac Benveniste) at the top of the half-title, following the title page. A comprehensive history of the Jewish community of Alexandria, Egypt spanning more than 2000 years, from the period of Greek rule (the Ptolemaic Kingdom) through the early 20th century. The work was written by Judaica scholar, journalist, publisher and teacher Ben-Zion Taragan (1870–1953). The Jerusalem-born Taragan, had been an assistant and colleague of Eliezer Ben‑Yehuda, and was a prominent member of the Jewish communities in both Ottoman Palestine and Egypt. From 1906 he lived in Alexandria and immersed himself in the Jewish community there. The text is accompanied throughout by photographic reproductions after original images of prominent figures and locations in the Jewish community of Alexandria, as well as a few other illustrations in b/w.
