Chronological lists of the priests of Alexandria and Ptolemais with a study of the Demotic transcriptions of their names. With the assistance of S. P. Vleeming.
It is a well-known fact that in Classical Antiquity the years were usually named after important local officials, who each functioned for a one-year term, e.g. the archons in Athens and the consuls in Rome. Under the monarchical regimes in the Hellenistic states and in imperial Rome, the cities continued to reckon the years in the traditional way, alongside the more obvious counting of regnal or imperial years... In the present study we have set ourselves a double task: to give an exact and clear chronological list of all known eponymous priests and priestesses, and to make a study of the demotic transcriptions of the Greek names. The two subjects are inextricably intertwined. As a matter of fact, many priest are known only from demotic texts, and their names have therefore to be reconstructed from the demotic renderings. A reliable reconstruction, however, can only be based on an adequate amount of bilingual material. Fortunately, a great deal of bilingual material is to be found in our lists, viz. whenever a priest is mentioned both in Greek and in a demotic text. Accordingly, the study of this bilingual material in Part 2 constitutes the justification of many an interpretation proposed in Part I.
Part one provides chronological lists of the Eponymous Priests of Ptolemaic Egypt, compiled by G. van der Veken, and part two the Demotic transcriptions of the Greek names of the Eponymous priests. by W. Clarysse. Part on contains a prosopographical index, and index of names: Greek-Demotic, an index of names: Greek-Hieroglyphic, and an index of sources. The volume is illustrated with diagrams containing the bilingual lists of priests. Few pages with underlining, markings or notes. Binding with light wear along edges and lightly rubbed.
