Baumanns Neue Farbtonkarte System Prase D.R.G.M. Block Ia (Four Boxes With 1325 Color Tone Cards System Prase)

Aue, Saxony: Paul Baumann, (1912). Boxes. Four boxes with flap lids (3 x 5 1/4 x 3 1/4"). Original green paper-covered flap lid boxes with silver lettering on top cover and side flap. The four boxes contain a total of 1325 color tone cards (2 7/8 x 4 5/8") with numbered gray dividers for the fourteen stacks of cards, 1–100, 100–200, 201–300, 301–400, 401–450, 451–500, 501–600, 601–700, 701–800, 801–888, 889–1000, 1001–1100, 1101–1200, 1201–1325, with five additional plain dividers. There are thirty-four additional cards due to various shadings, e.g. gray No. 32 with additional cards for 32a, 32b, 32c, and 32d. Sixteen cards are missing: 413, 417, 424, 457, 477, 478, 551, 711, 717, 735, 736, 821, 896, 980, 990, and 1201. No copies found in OCLC.

These Color Tone Card Blocks, System Prase, most likely is the second edition Ia of the first of the Paul Baumann publications based on the cooperation between Baumann and the painter Otto Prase that started in 1911. These color tone blocks were improved and simplified in as far as the mixing ratios (proportions) for the respective tones are printed to the back of each color tone card. The suggestion came from the known paint company G. Siegel & Co. who also provided a rich assortment of paint for this project. All color tone cards are silkscreened with respective colors.

The running numbers from 1 to 1325 are printed to the back of each color card in bold numbers to allow for the user to place the cards into the original order at any given time. Following the number the color tone and the shading are indicated, e.g. 194 - 10 P 1 - 62 Krapplack (Rose Madder), 38 Ultramarinblau, O L 1, meaning red trending towards brown with mixing ratios for Krapplack and blue. To provide an easy way to convert quantities for larger color volumes, weight proportions for the colors involved in the mixing process are specified at a rate of 100 part = 100 grams. An additional row of capital letters and numbers indicates the preference for the application of paint with oil, paste, chalk, concrete and facades, these are identified by letters, lightfastness by numbers from one to four with four indicating accelerated fading. For example:
