A scarce first edition of this obscure novel from Philadelphia author Milton Goldsmith (1861-1957). In the preface to the novel, an exploration of human nature, society, Jewish identity and crime, the author writes "My heroes and heroines are humble folk, with intensely human characteristics, with sterling qualities and corresponding shortcomings, and I introduce them to the reader without praise or apology." In addition to the frontispiece, there are 3 other illustrated plates of b/w reproductions after original illustrations, p.79, 124, and 226. Binding with some light rubbing to extremities. Head and tail of spines light rubbed and creases. Interior with starting along the gutter at the title page and at page 14. There are few minor to light smudges and/or stains to a few pages throughout. Book block slightly cocked. Binding in very good-, interior in good+. g+ to vg-. Item #47721
