Chicago: Meyer Both Company, 1922–1924. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. (1) 20pp., 4 plates; (1) 14pp.; 5 plates; (1) 10pp. Original light brown illustrated wraps with dark brown lettering and decorative ruling on covers. Each booklet contains descriptive educational text supplemented with illustrations.

1. Booklets, Catalogs, Folders and Broadsides. Their Construction and Design. Facts on printing, the intelligent use of color designing the cover, preparing the dummy and selling the work. Department of Art Instruction, Series B, 1922. Twenty illustrated pages covering all aspects of design and purpose of booklets to advertise merchandise. The booklet leads the reader through the process from the planning stages to selection of size and shape, cover stock, cover papers, flyleaf, body paper stock, envelopes, preparing the dummy, arrangement and design of pages, illustrations, engravings, the overall layout, and the printing process. Contains a summary of the instructions in keywords at rear. Light wear along edges of wraps.

2. Design. Historic ornaments commercially applied. Prehistoric effort, classic decoration, selection of motifs, design arrangement, and harmony and rhythm. Series C, 1923. Fourteen illustrated pages containing an introduction for the study of ornamental and decorative art and chapters describing art periods of historic relevance to choose from: The Savage Warrior, Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Elizabethan, Arabian, Turkish, Moresque, Persian, and others. Laid in four b/w double page charts with 198 samples from various periods. The publication contains a descriptive list and explanation of chart figures. Light wear along edges of wraps and charts.

3. Merchandise Illustration. "The advertising wallop", still-life arrangement, commodities illustrated commercially. dominance display, individuality in modern advertisements, and newspaper Cut Service. Series C, 1923. Nine pages explaining the intricacies of developing powerful and effective advertisements with explanations relating to the samples presented on five double page charts, one in color, provided with the booklet. Probably missing one page of color samples. Light wear along wraps and charts.

4. Constructive Drawing. General instructions, first principles, correct proportions, blocking-in method, sketching from models, crayon handling and light and shade. Series F, 1924. Ten illustrated pages with general instructions and specifics relating to the keywords above. Missing charts. Wraps with light wear along edges. Middle signature loose but present. Due to water exposure the very bottom part seemed to have been glued together and separated with very little loss of print. Overall in good- condition. g- to vg. Item #47569
