The photographs of buildings, gardens and details were taken by the author during his trip through the Mediterranean countries prior to the publication of this work, encountering southern Europe,northern Africa, and the islands of the Mediterranean. Scarce complete first edition containing a foreword by Requa and twelve sections A-L in separate portfolios with light brown covers holding twelve numbered photographic plates each, with table of content printed to covers and captions to verso of the plates: Houses-Country Type; Buildings-City Type; Street Scenes; Street Facades and Entrances; Doorways; Door Details-Grilles-Gates; Balconies; Window Grills and Shutters; Roofs-Towers-Cornices; Courts and Patios; Garden Details; and miscellaneous. The photographs (6 1/4 x8 1/2") are reproduced in high quality offset printing are selected and arranged especially for use in developing a logical and appropriate style of architecture for California and the Pacific Southwest.
Requa's style is considered Spanish Revival architecture with occasional American Craftsman influences. The architectural firm Requa & Jackson dominated San Diego architecture during the 1920s triggering a wave of interest in the Spanish Mediterranean style and creating what was deemed the California Style. Requa was also the Master Architect for the California Pacific International Exhibition, held in Balboa Park in 1935–36. This deluxe Special Architect's Edition was published one year before the regular book version and was distributed to architects, technical schools and libraries of California.
