Intimate portrait of the the vaudeville atmosphere at its height during the 1920s in Germany in in thirty-two prosaic sketches, introducing big names and unknowns from the world of jugglers, acrobats, clowns, animal trainers, agents and managers. With one hundred and sixteen magnificent illustrations by Walter Trier, known for his illustrations of Erich Kästner's books as well as the magazine Lilliput. Four of the illustrations are full page, in color and reproduced lightographically. Trier was a devoted German-Jewish illustrator and bitterly opposed to the Nazis. He emigrated to London in 1936 and illustrated anti Nazi leaflets and propaganda for the Ministry of Information. Text in German. Dustjacket with some wear, small and medium size chips along edges and spine, some creasing. Original wraps lightly sunned along edges.
