北齋漫畵 Hokusai Manga (Vol. 11)
[ca. mid 19th century]. Early printing. Softcover. Large octavo. Unpaginated. String-bound blue paper wrappers. This is an early printing of the 11th volume of the classic monumental work by Hokusai (1760-1849) originally issued in 15 volumes between 1812-1878. The large range of content depicted in this volume includes evocative and engaging images ranging from artists, animals, mythical beasts, sumo wrestlers, farmers, domestic scenes, landscapes, and weaponry (including firearms). All images beautifully printed in b/w and hues of light pink. The introduction to this volume is by Ryutei Tanehiko (1783-1842), the acclaimed playwright, many of whose works were originally illustrated by Hokusai.
