Tissue-guarded albumin photographic portrait of the author. Title page inscribed by Giuseppe Capellini to the First Secretary of Prince Umberto (who will become King of Italy from 1878 until his assassination in 1900).
Illustrated with 13 in-text figs and 4 full-page plates, Capellini's memories of a scientific journey to North America in 1863 contains various geological surveys in Pulpit-Rock, Acton mine, Point Levi, Montmorenci, Nebraska and Cincinnati; a visit to Wahington DC and the White House, the Niagara Falls, to the Indians in the Dakota territory, as well as a visit to Ne-hi-ga-kuh, Chief of the Ponkas, etc..
Includes a color folded map of North America at rear. Also includes a bibliography of the author's works, pp. 281-283.
Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges of binding. Previous owner's gift inscription at verso of frontispiece, and inscription at verso of title page. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in Italian. Binding in overall good, interior in good to very good condition. g to vg. Item #46572
