Frontispiece photographic portrait., The work is a monograph on the life and work of acclaimed Soviet Jewish theater actor and director Solomon Mikhoels (1890-1948) Mikhoels was the leading actor of the Moscow State Jewish Theater company (established in 1920), and from 1928 until his death in 1948, he served as artistic director. The work covers the time from his early life through his work as leading actor, and ultimately the director of the company. Illustrated throughout with striking b/w photographic reproductions, showing Mikhoels on stage and in costume in a wide variety of roles. This is a later and more comprehensive work than similar monograph on Mikhoels written by Mikhail Zagorsky, originally published in 1927. This work uses a few of the same images as the previous work, but has many more.

Mikhoels was ultimately assassinated, under the guise of an accidental traffic accident, by Stalin, and other member of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (of which he served as chairman) were killed in 1952 during the infamous "Night of the Murdered Poets".
