Jewish Gnosticism, Merkabah Mysticism, and Talmudic Tradition: Based on the Israel Goldstein Lectures, Delivered at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York

New York: The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 1960. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. vii. 126 pp. Original orange Cloth with gold lettering on cover and spine. An important series of lectures on early Jewish mysticism by the great scholar Gershom Scholem. Includes articles on the Pardes, Shiur Komah, and the angels Metatron and Akatriel. Scholem famously argued that later medieval Jewish kabbalah was heavily influenced by the Gnostic tradition. Here he works to forge links between Gnosticism and the rabbinic Hakhaloth literature. Text in English, with "Ma'aseh Merkabah", an unpublished Merkabah text in Hebrew comprising appendix C and "Mishnath Shir ha-Shirim", by Professor Saul Lieberman in Hebrew as appendix D (pages 103-26). Head and tail of spine bumped. Light bumping to corners. Overall in very good condition. vg. Item #46184
