Ottoman Ferman of Sultan Abdülmecid I, October 1857

Turkey: 1857. Framed. Image measures 14x19" in a 18x24.5" gold metal frame. This beautifully calligraphic decree issued in October 1857, by Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I (1823-1861), states the promotion of a British soldier (Daniel Grayville?) to the fifth rank and awards him with a "kita", for bravery in battle. Dated " 2- Rabi 1274 (1857) Calligraphic black lettering, with the sultan's tughra in gilt at the top. Typed description from the Smithsonian Museum (with some inaccurate information), taped to the back. Some damp stains on the decree. Item #45958
