Extensive photo credits listed at rear provide an overview of German business and culture, with only few photographers named, e.g. Walter Baasch, Otto Haekel, Hans Harz, Else Schneider, Ilse Steinhoff, and Ehrengard Trotha. The text gives a historical overview, from the significance of the sea for humanity in general and its utilization for trade. Covers the Germanic involvement from the Vikings to the Third Reich.
