Original blue cloth with gilt-stamped dancer on cover, gilt lettering on spine, in original illustrated dustjacket, yellow lettering on spine, in protective mylar. illustrated tan endpapers. Illustrated half-title and title page. Beautifully produced book with six double pages containing original dress designs by Doris Zinkeisen, Dmitri Bouchène, Hein Heckroth for various ballets, reproduced in eight colors, 64 pages of intriguing b/w photographs of ballets, including reproductions of drawings, and numerous in-text drawings of single dancers as well as ballet scenes. Kurt Jooss studied dance under Rudolf von Laban, and danced in various lead roles choreographed by Laban. Jooss is known for combining classical ballet with theater and founding several dance companies, including what became the Folkwang Tanztheater in Essen. He refused when asked to dismiss the Jewish dancers from his company by the Nazis and subsequently had to flee Germany, sought refuge in the Netherlands and eventually settled in England. Touring Europe and America he opened a school at Darlington Hall in Devonshire. Jooss returned to Essen and was active for 19 more years. The famed German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch was one of his students. DJ with light wear along edges, small chips and tear at head of spine. Binding with light wear along edges.
